Jean-Christophe Gairard

Jean-Christophe Gairard is a violinist, composer and educator.

He discovered his passion for Slavonic music through the works of composers such as Bartók, Wieniawski, and Dvořák but his current musical path was profoundly shaped by an artistic relationship with Violinists Tcha Limberger and Marcel Râmba during a journey to Cluj-Napoca, in the heart of Transylvania. Gairard has returned to Romania extensively to further explore and master a style and repertoire that reflects a rich fusion of Hungarian, Romanian, Jewish, Roma, and German influences.

Between 2016 and 2018, he undertook an 17-month voyage visiting the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile, experiences that expanded his musical perspective. His journey culminated in Brazil, where he immersed himself in samba and choro, further developing his skills on both the violin and the 7-string guitar.

  • Throughout his career, he has collaborated with numerous respected ensembles and musicians. The European Symbolic Orchestra of Ljubljana, the Tchayok trio (Russian and Gypsy music), the Troïka ensemble (Russian music), the Big Band Outch Men Orchestra, the Clair de Lune trio, and the Tzwing quartet.
Currently, he is actively involved with his own JC Gairard Quintet, the mountain-based itinerant concert project Tournée des Refuges, and performs with a quartet alongside Tcha Limberger, as well as with Duo Mierlitsa and Quarteto Rebolô. He is a resident instructor at the Fiddlers on the Move workshops in Ghent.

Gairard lives in his native Marseille and has embarked on a study of Provençal, a variety of the Occitan language spoken in Provence, as part of his dedication to engaging with the musical heritage of his region.
In addition to his violin studies, he contributed to an ambitious project dedicated to the transcription and preservation of traditional Romanian folk music.
